There was a discussion on facebook about nuclear armament being kept as a deterrent. I said this. I felt you might be interested.
Personally, I think we should keep some, for now, just in case they are actually needed. However, I don't think they should be upgraded, and we certainly shouldn't make any more. I don't think any missiles should be made at all, really. I don't see why a country should spend money on making missiles, bullets and bombs at the expense of healthcare and education.
Did you know a cruise missile costs $600,000 to make? That doesn't count in the cost of maintaining them, launching them, or the wages of the staff who look after and launch them. The total cost (in dollars) for the entire American Tomahawk cruise missile program was $11,210,000,000. How many schools could be built with that money? How many medical supplies could be bought with that money? But no, instead of spending money on improving our future, we spend it on bombing the shit out of someone else and sending them back to the stone age. Surely ensuring a good future for our own children should take priority over making sure someone else has no future whatsoever.

I completely agree with you. But there's no way the weapons industry will...
A few days ago I finished a technical drawing project I had. I decided to draw a big, complicated weapon and this is the title I used:
"Peace these days means having a better weapon than the guy next to you."
It's shit, but that's reality for you.
P.S. I really should get off the pc. I'm supposed to be in the middle of a freakin' exam!

Definitely. Over here, we have some years in which the GDP that goes to the Ministry of Defence exceeds 20%. Moreover, every year there's a fight over who's getting more of the available funds, and the MOD always wins over "unimportant" ministries such as the Education one.
Though things are somewhat bad here in several ways. For instance, we got no health minister, but we do have a health vice-minister - as well as several ministers with no office.
