I figured i'd write a foreword, or a prologue, or whatever the hell you want to call it... So without further ado, here it is.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hello, reader, and thankyou for purchasing or stealing this book. Now, you might find this interesting, but one thing you must know, is this is true. It might not seem true, but I assure you this is not fiction. Should you happen to stumble across an island somewhere, with a large castle situated neatly in the centre, then you shall know.
This castle is the Dark SiDe's castle, and on this island, within those hallowed halls you shall find the essence of heroes, and of villains. Which is which shall be up to you, after all, it is a matter of perspective. The man you call Hitler believed he was doing the right thing, as did Stalin, Mao, and many other people that are generally regarded as "monsters". Yet despite this belief they are doing right, many said they were evil, and thus managed, over time, to overcome them. Some say that is how it happens. Good triumphs over evil. But then again, the one that wins will always be said to be good. The evil one is always the loser. If Hitler had won World War 2, we would believe he should be revered, and that Churchill, not Hitler, was a vile beast worthy of death.
That is one of the secrets of the world, that although we hear of monsters and terrors abroad, we never hear of monsters and beasts within our own system, which is inherently why they continue to exist. Within the pretence of good lies the perpetuity of evil, and this is exactly what the Light Side was... But where there is light, there must also be shadow, a darkness that overcomes the light, if only for a moment. We were that darkness. We were the shadows blotting out the light, for the light lied to the people, the light controlled them, and if they dared argue the people were crushed beneath an iron fist.
We, the Dark SiDe, as we became known, had no pretence of good, and no pretence of evil, we knew the Light Side had to go, no matter what the cost. Many moons ago, we made a pact with demons, they came and helped us, for they knew the Light Side would hunt them down too. The Light Side had created foul creatures especially for demon extermination, and called them "angels", further advancing the idea that they were on a holy crusade to purge the land of all evil. In reality, they wanted domination.
This was unacceptable. We had to stop them, we simply had to. We knew they would do something terrible if they succeeded in their campaign, and so we created this base, our castle, and recruited the best warriors for our cause. We knew what must be done, just not how we must do it. And that was when the items came into our knowledge. Items with holders, insane quests of extreme difficulty and disturbing in their detail, and yet we decided to go for them... We knew that we stood little chance, yet we went, we searched for them, and after so long, after even the events within this book, for there is only so much one book can say, we managed to get them all...
And now, we plan to unite them once again."
Written by Vergil King, found fixed to his bedroom door with a large knife. The rest of the text is illegible. Vergil was nowhere to be found.
Nice. Real nice, indeed.
I liked most of it - but there are a few things I didn't understand.
First - It is mentioned we want to stop the Light Side, not that we want to take over the world - but we do. We aren't good doers. We do want complete domination. You made it look like we were good called "The Dark SiDe" and they were evil called "The Light Side", which I don't think is the case.
Second - Is the Light Side already up when the D-SD is starting to appear, or has it been created around the same time? (I think the second, though I might have missed some early RPs wich settle that)
And last, and most important - Why do you have to include names of such monstrosities in the book? I really don't think that Hitler, Stalin, Mao and Churchil should be mentioned in the book, even if its just the prologue: Literature-wise, it might cause the D-SD to look like those - which will create negative connotations to us.
And idealogically wise, I don't think we should give voice to their names, at all.
(You might doubt some of the names, but eventually, I don't see a point of using any of the names at all - after all, it is all a matter of perspective)
First of all... Well, sure, some do, but others don't... HB, for example, doesn't want to rule the world. Nor do some others. They want to eradicate the Light Side, and for some, world domination is just a consequence. besides, I never said the D-SD didn't want domination. I said it was unacceptable for the D-SD to let the Light Side achieve domination. After all, how can you dominate if someone else already is? Overthrowing them would be much harder.
Secondly, the D-SD was started as a retaliation to the Light Side. I'm pretty sure of that.
Third. They are included merely to help make the point more important that it is a matter of opinion and perspective.
As for SD's complaint that the D-SD decided to stop the quest for the holders... This is in the future, so, basically, it could be that in future, a new Queen or King wanted to continue the quest.
Wait, but the D-SD wasn't created to dominate the world? Now I'm confused.
About those people - I never thought you wanted to put their names in to honor them; I was certain you only put them there to prove a point. However, I really don't think any of them should be mentioned in the book. And I mean that I really don't want it to an extraordinary level. I won't participate in a creation which has their names in the prologue - While comparing them to any of the sides.
Wow, you feel very strongly about that, huh?
Well, as I said, it might not get used. If it was used it'd probably just complicate things further. I was just putting the idea out there, is all.
Yeah, quite much actually.
The idea is good. I believe the way you did it is very good. Except this one point.
Do you intend on adding Vergil to the RP?
You made it look like we were good called "The Dark SiDe" and they were evil called "The Light Side", which I don't think is the case. - Mmm not exactly. The Dark SiDe wants to rule, but it doesn't want 'world domination'. They just want to change the world as it is. Overthrow the Light Side and lead the people, without really taking their freedom away.
Second - Is the Light Side already up when the D-SD is starting to appear, or has it been created around the same time? (I think the second, though I might have missed some early RPs wich settle that) - The Light Side was created a while before the Dark SiDe, it has already been ruling for ages.
And last, and most important - Why do you have to include names of such monstrosities in the book? I really don't think that Hitler, Stalin, Mao and Churchil should be mentioned in the book, even if its just the prologue: Literature-wise, it might cause the D-SD to look like those - which will create negative connotations to us. - i agree with TD here. It would be best of those names were not included.
P.S. That Vergil thing in the end confused me too... i dont really understand it.
Vergil was a non-canon character... He sent a book back from the future or something, which chronicled the Dark SiDe story.
Which is why, on second thoughts, my idea wasn't the best. Still, it'd be interesting to see what sort of foreword we could get.
Well, we can always make more than one foreward, in fact, the more the better, then the best bits from each could be compiled, to make it one immense foreward/prologue.
I wrote a little intro monologue of Cho, I've also written one for Liam and I'll do SD's and Nolana's one soon enough. Think you guys can write something similar for your own character?
Feels strange to finally be down here, on earth. I've been staring at it for so long from above, but I was unable to experience the actual thing. I saw the human world come to life, from the cave men to today's world. I used to be fascinated by their kind. How, despite the fact that they did not have any claws, sharp teeth or other natural weapons, they were able to not only survive, but to rule the animal kingdom. There was something special about them, they could actually think and process things with logic, and they had emotions. Then they evolved some more. And i felt disappointed. Such intelligent beings and all they seemed to be doing was fighting over money and power. Those two things i never understood. Money? If i recall correctly, it was just something they had invented to help them in their everyday lives. What was meant to be just a tool, eventually became the ultimate purpose. Of course with money comes power and power can be used to gain even more money. It's a loop really.
For the following years I became uninterested in the humans, i turned my attention to other species. The elves were far more extraordinary than any other, I decided. In my long (oh so very long) life so far, I studied them, their culture and their ways. I spent a part of my life watching the demons too - didn't interest me much. So i returned my attention to the elves - all of their tribes, the night elves, the forest elves, the blood elves, the high elves and more - while keeping and eye on the humans as well. The technologies they had created were unbelievable, but at the same time, so easily overpowered by magic. Still it was enough to keep me interested in them, despite everything else. What i could never grasp though, be that in the human or the elven world, was the concept of love. How was it that those creatures could love and I couldn't? It felt unfair. The love between friends, the love or a parent to its child, the love between lovers. I knew I could never experience it and that made me feel empty inside. I longed to detach myself from the mass of the Sprits, do something with my life, make a difference. Of course when the chance came, I took it and it wasn't long before the Sprits were allowing me to descend to earth, on special mission. i did see the importance in the task that was given to me; the girl i had to protect was clearly far more important than people gave her credit for, at the time. Even though I knew I should be anxious, I secretly felt happy to be finally free.
I have to admit that my first few weeks on earth I was what they'd call "cold". I was nothing more than an emotionless creature, alien to them. The girl saw me as her saviour at first; I didn't know how to handle that. Love and affection were not my strongest points. I admit that there was a period when we highly disliked each other. I started to understand why some people were led to murder. Not that I had that option. My soul was bound to the girl's. I saw her as a pest, holding me back, taking my true freedom away. And she saw me as an annoying creature that would not leave her alone, give her some privacy and who kept telling her what she should and shouldn't do. As time went by, I begun to change, learn about the world I now lived in. All those years I spent watching it, I believed I knew everything there was to know - later on I only realized just how ignorant I was. It wasn't easy for me at first, however, I was able to discover about emotions and learn how to live and love.
Liam's monologue xD (Liam has agreed in this)
My life started when I joined the Dark SiDe. Truth is, my past has always been a clouded mystery. My memory doesn't go further back than my 16th birthday, four years ago. At that time of my life, I was with the High Elves. They had found me at the edge of a river, half drowned, and brought me to their land. For two years I lived among them; they taught me their ways, how to fight and how to use magic I will be forever grateful to them. At first I desperately tried to remember my past, to dig up even a tiny old memory, but I had no success in doing so. Eventually I gave up, accepting my new life and who I had become.
When I was 18, I decided it was time to leave the shelter of the elves and make my own luck. Problem was that I had no memory of any part of the world, except the land of the elves that I had lived in. That's why I decided to follow another human, leaving the city. I had met her before, but hadn't really talked to her much. The only thing I knew about her was that she belonged to the same species as me - which was comforting - and that everyone called her SD. There was also a strange, silver dragon by her side most of the time - I didn't take much notice. Wasn't long before the Dark SiDe was created. SD knew people; she was able to assemble a fair amount of young warriors and demons and get them to follow her. I had nowhere else to go and the castle of the D-SD became my home. More Dark SiDers came and the famous Elite was formed - I was granted the powerful title of the Prince, as the first one who joined SD. I never knew why the elves had chosen to shelter me, until I met Samantha. Turns out she was the one who had sensed my presence by the river and had urged them to take me in and train me. Somehow she knew that I would follow her one day.
Although I was adept in all types of magic, I was drawn to the subject of Mystic Telepathy. It involved creating illusions and altering the way people viewed reality; in other words, messing with their minds. Through that power of mine I was able to gradually affect the emotions and mood of humans as well - elves were much harder to manipulate. It was even possible to alter an enemy's mind in such a way, that he would end up fighting for me, rather than against me. Mystic Telepathy proved to be quite easy when it came to normal human beings, opposed to dealing with magical beings, where things got a lot more complicated. For that reason I had brought myself to master the elements, which would be enough of a weapon for me. I decided to carry two swords with me too, just in case, even if magic was my preferred way of combat. Nowadays I like to spend some time in the Dark SiDe library, searching for clues that may shed some light to my past, but I have promised myself that regardless what I may discover, it will not alter who I am now - a Dark SiDer.
