Cho shook the boy, without leaving his eyes. “How is it that you know this woman?” He demanded, even though he already knew. The vibe he had gotten from Nathaniel’s mind was too strong to be mistaken. “I suppose you’d recognise my mother,” Nathaniel whispered calmly. Choethel knew the answer to the question he was going to ask next as well, but spoke anyway: “And who is your father boy?” “Do I really need to answer that question… dad?”
__________
Without saying a word, Choethel had darted in the sky and now he was tearing his way through the clouds, while Nathaniel levitated right next to him. Queen SD had tried to follow them but Liam had stopped her – the matter was only between Cho and Nathaniel, father and son.
“Choethel, stop!” Shouted Nathaniel at the dragon. “I know you want to find her, to go to her, but you shouldn’t.” “Why shouldn’t I? Why did you keep this from me Nathaniel?” The Sprit roared. “What good would it do? You meeting with her would only cause more pain, and you’ve both suffered enough already!” He tried to reason with Cho, but he would not listen. “I don’t care! It doesn’t matter!” “In that case, I am sorry for what I am about to do,” and before Cho could react, Nathaniel summoned his telekinetic powers and sent him tumbling towards the ground. The impact was not strong enough to kill him – the boy had been extremely careful about that – but it was enough to shake him. “Your mind is clouded by emotions, your actions make no sense!” “And since when did love make sense?” Stormed Cho, who had now taken his human form. “But you wouldn’t know the slightest thing about love…” He could have sworn that a hurt look crossed Nathaniel’s face, before his emotions were once again hidden behind the blank mask he always put on. “Love,” the boy’s voice was almost a whisper, “is the reason I am trying to stop you.” Since Cho simply gave him a confused look, the boy continued. “What would happen if you went there to see her? Do you forget why you parted in the first place? Even if she had elven blood in her veins, Tundra will age one day. You and I will not. Seeing her now would bring nothing but more tears. Don’t do that to yourself and, above all, don’t do that to Tundra. She deserves better than that.”
As much as Nathaniel’s words pained Choethel, they were also able to silence him and bring him back to his senses. Without a warning, he dropped to his knees and covered his face with his hands. Feeling slightly awkward, Nathaniel walked up to him and crouched next to Cho, placing a hand on his back, in an attempt to comfort him. “I am sorry,” the boy mumbled after a while. “There was definitely a better way for you to find out…” “I will forgive you Nathaniel. After all, isn’t that what parents are supposed to do?” The Sprit tried to smile, but his smile came out hollow. “Does that mean that I have to start calling you father from now on?” “I think that would be slightly strange. No, Cho is just fine…” “Thank you…”
__________
From that day on, Cho would give Nathaniel weekly lessons on how to control his power. Then every weekend the two of them would help Queen SD and Liam teach their two children – Shea and Lance, who was a year younger than his sister – the art of sorcery. The number of the attacks seemed to multiply but Nathaniel refused to go on any missions and the other Dark SiDer didn’t object. After all they had all heard of what had happened on his last fight.

“Focus,” spoke Cho. “I’m trying,” Nathaniel shut his eyes harder and gritted his teeth in frustration. “It’s clearly not enough,” his father pushed him. “I said I’m trying!” For a moment sparks of energy burst from his fist. “Control your anger. You don’t want to hurt me, do you?” Warned Cho, his voice soothing.
Nathaniel took in deep breaths and did as he was told. His task seemed simple enough – he had to paralyse Choethel from the waist down. The tricky part was that he had to do so without actually harming him and in the heat of battle. In order to achieve that, he would have to aim for a specific section of Cho’s brain and deactivate it telepathically. After his training, he would proceed with healing any damage he had caused – as long it wasn’t irreversible… That posed quite a challenge, since the damage Nathaniel tended to cause when using his power was anything but reversible.
“Why you?” He complained. “Why can I not fight a demon or something?” “Because you will only truly focus if you care about the person standing before you. Sure, you wouldn’t be too pleased with killing a demon but it wouldn’t be the end of the world. Harming your own father, however… well that takes things on an entirely different level.” “I do not wish to hurt you,” Nathaniel turned his gaze to the floor at the thought of that. “You will not. I trust you,” and he truly did.

The fight was heating up now. If an untrained eye saw them battling, it would seem as if they were two mortal enemies, duelling with utter hatred for each other. Yet if someone took a closer look, he’d realised that it was nothing like that. Choethel was not holding back one bit, but it wasn’t because of his hatred, it was because he knew that no matter how hard he attacked, his opponent would get right back up. Nathaniel on the other hand was putting a tremendous effort in not harming his father. His blows still came out rather powerful but he was trying to contain them as much as he could.
As Nathaniel prepared to strike, his eyes began to glow brighter and sparks of energy flew everywhere. Immediately he realised that he was losing control and so with a powerful tug on his mind, he cut his attack in midair. While Cho was proud for his son’s achievement and control, he also saw it as a chance to strike. He swung his sword so swiftly that the 14-year-old Nathaniel had no time to react. The blade met his throat and in a split second, his head was cleaved right off his shoulders. Cho smiled at his victory and proceeded with chopping the headless body of Nathaniel into a hundred pieces. Then he sat down and waited.
It wasn’t long before all the pieces of the boy’s body, along with the head, dissolved into a silver dust. It began to swirl around into a dusty cloud and with a bright light, it look the form of Nathaniel once again. A very angry-looking Nathaniel. The boy let out an enraged shout – something he rarely ever did – and charged. Immediately he was able to corner Cho and with a violent flick of his hand, he hit his brain with a powerful blast of telekinesis. Cho’s eyes widened, before he slumped down to the ground.
For a few minutes Nathaniel sat down, allowing himself to relax. He had been successful once again. “Hey, think I can have my body back now?” muttered Cho, who was still unable to move. “No I think I’ll just let you be paralysed for the next few weeks,” joked Nathaniel, before extending his arm and undoing the harm he had caused to his father’s brain. “You know, for a second there, I thought you were going to finish me off,” said Cho, as he sat by the boy’s side. “I was. But then I changed my mind. Probably because I realised it wasn’t the best idea.” “Glad you thought so…” and Cho did indeed sound relieved. “Still what you did was pretty annoying.” Cho laughed. “You think so? But no, having you head cleaved off and then your body chopped into little bits and pieces must be a blast!” “Oh yes, it certainly does have its fun bits.” Over the years, Nathaniel had learnt that “humour” was not as pointless as some humans made it seem. “Hey Nath,” spoke Cho sceptically, “what’s it like? Pure Immortality. What’s it like, knowing that no matter what, it is physically impossible for you to die?” Nathaniel remained silent for a bit. How did one answer such question? “I don’t know…” he whispered. “Sometimes it’s great – it makes me feel so free. I could go ahead and blow myself up and it would be as if nothing had ever happened, which is good. And then there are times it scares me. I mean, really, honestly terrifies me. No man on this planet should hold such power… it’s not natural. And anyway, why me and not my sister?” Nathaniel had told Cho everything he could about his twin, so the father was not surprised when he mentioned her. “You may be twins, but you carry different genes. Marianne is more human, while you are more Sprit. I think it is the mix of your Sprit genes with the ancient, elven magic in… your mother’s… blood that did the trick.” “Still, sometimes I wish I didn’t have this power. What’s the use in being Purely Immortal, when you know that at any time, the people you’ve grown to love can die?” “I wish a lot of things were different Nathaniel. But they aren’t. Sometimes you just have to suck it up, and make the best with what you have…”

Days came, days went, seasons passed because that’s what seasons do, and Nathaniel reached the 17th year of his eternal life. He had grown quite a bit in the past three years, just like his powers had.
A knock on the door. “Who is it?” Nathaniel asked, not taking his gaze away from the book he was reading. “Hey Nath, it’s me,” a young girly voice sounded joyfully. “You can come in…” He called out, not sounding too exited. Immediately a small head peaked in, grinning. She ran by Nathaniel’s side and started pulling on his hand. “Come on, I want to show you something!” She burbled, still tugging. “Can it not wait Shea?” Nathaniel rubbed his forehead as the girl shook her head. Samantha’s daughter seemed to be quite fond of him and kept trying to spend as much time with him as possible, while he needed to either be studying about magic or practicing with his powers. Shea had her mother’s eye and hair colour, but her features looked just like her father’s, only more feminine of course. She was just 11 years old and still she was anxious about discovering everything there was to know about the world around her. Since her brother didn’t show much interest in her, while the other Dark SiDers seemed to be busy with the Light Side, Nathaniel was the only one she had to turn to.
“You didn’t find another wounded Troll, did you?” Nath inquired. “Of course not!” Chirped Shea. “This one’s in the Castle!” The girl lead him through multiple corridors and he couldn’t help but be a little curious as they made their way deeper into the Castle. “Shea, where are we going?” He’d asked her every now and then. “You’ll see…” She’d always reply, with the grin on her face never fading.
They made their way down some stairs, a long, spiral staircase that ended in what seemed like a dead end. She finally stopped and turned to him. “Okay… Close your eyes!” Nathaniel did as he was told – after all he didn’t need his eyesight to truly see around him. He sensed and heard Shea push a few stones in the wall in a specific order. How original, he thought sarcastically, rolling his eyes under his closed eyelids. Then he let the little girl hold his hand and guide him forward. Instantly, Nathaniel sensed a massive source of power nearby. Where had the girl taken him? “You can open your eyes now!” She said, not noticing that Nathaniel had already done so.
Before them, floating in mid-air was a large sphere, made out of a crystal-like substance. It shone with all the colours of the rainbow and seemed to have ripples constantly forming on it out of nothing, while it made absolutely no sound. “The Power-core…” Nathaniel muttered in awe. He started at its beauty for a moment, walked towards it as it was drawing him nearer, calling out to him to come take a closer look. Then he snapped out of it. “Shea… Your mother has sealed this room for a reason. How did you get in here?” “I found a secret passageway,” she shrugged. “What’s so wrong with it anyway? It’s so pretty!” At that Shea darted towards the Power-core and, before Nathaniel could do anything to stop her, she reached out for it and touched it. “No!” The boy yelled, but it was too late. A ripple formed where Shea had touched, but it was different from the others – instead of shinning, it was made out of darkness. Then a faint, purple light emitted from it, which got brighter and brighter by the second. “Nath… What is happening?” Shea asked, in shock. “Shea get your hand off that thing at once!” She tried, she really did, but it was impossible. “I can’t, it’s stuck!” She cried and, realising what a grave mistake she’d made, she felt her eyes water. Then a moment later, as the light grew even brighter: “It’s… It’s sucking me in! HELP! Nathaniel!” Nathaniel was trying to pull her away, but the Power-core wouldn’t let him. “I want you to stand still Shea, can you do that?” He looked her in the eyes, hoping that the little girl would not panic. She nodded through a river of tears. I have to cleave the energy off… Preferably without cutting any of her fingers in the process... He thought, clenching is teeth.
Nathaniel brought his hand down, both with force and in a delicate pattern. He was grasping all the rays of light and energy of the Power-core around Shea’s hand telepathically and with a mental tug, he tore them away from the whole. A bright light and Shea fell on her back, her hand finally released. The Power-core didn’t seem to take that too well. It started twisting and turning its crystal-like substance around, like an angered beast.
“Nath, run!” Shea shouted, terrified. “It’s going to explode!” Nathaniel shook his head. “I got it.” “Are you crazy?!” This thing looks like it’s going supernova!” “I said I GOT it. Listen, if the Power-core is destroyed, the location of the Island will be revealed to the rest of the world, our defences will fall and the Dark SiDe will be done for. Do you want that to happen?” Shea shook her head, tears still running down her now red cheeks. “Then go, get out of here. I’ll be fine. I promise…” Nodding in silence, the little girl left. “Now… to put this Power-core back to its place…” whispered Nathaniel.
Rays of energy were trying to break free, to burst out of the Core, but Nathaniel wouldn’t let them. He channelled the energy with outstanding precision and restrained it, forming it once again into a sphere. When he was certain that the Power-core was back to normal, he let go of the mental links he had formed with its substance and let it float in silence, just like it was supposed to.
Shea was waiting for him outside the chamber – she’d finally stopped crying but the look of fear was still imprinted on her face. “No more Castle exploring, understood?” Nathaniel spoke in a serious, almost terrifying tone, and the young girl could do nothing but nod in agreement.

“Are you sure about this Tundra?” Grey asked, as she watched the woman wave at her daughter. Tears were running down her cheeks, both tears of joy and of sadness. “Of… of c-course!” Sobbed Tundra, while trying to form a smile on her lips. “It’s j-just that… t-they grow up… so fast!” “Alright then… I trust you.” “Bye mum!” The 17-year-old girl shouted from afar, tears running down her cheeks as well. When they could not longer make out Marianne’s figure, the mother let out a loud sigh. “She’ll be fine… She belongs with her brother. It’s the safest place for them both… The Dark SiDe…”
__________
It was the first time Nathaniel hadn’t sensed someone approaching. He was naturally taken by surprise when he saw a girl, about his age, walk towards the Castle. Instantly curious, he levitated down from the rooftop where he had been quietly sitting, and landed right in front of her. “Who are you?” He questioned, slightly defensive. “Wow, where did you come from?” The dark-haired girl let out a little nervous giggle. It reminded of Nathaniel of someone in particular. He hadn’t seen that person in years, and yet her image had been imprinted in his mind. “From… up… there…” he mumbled, trying to register what he was seeing. Was it really her? What was she doing there? “Very descriptive,” the girl noted. “Who are you?” Nathaniel raised his voice and pulled closer to her. That’s when she noticed his eyes. “It’s you!” She exclaimed. “It’s really you! Mother used to talk to me about you!” “Marianne!” Nathaniel almost let out a shocked laugh as his sister hugged him. “What are you doing here? How’s Tundra?” “She’s holding up just fine! She misses you! She… she sent me here. Said that I belonged in the Dark SiDe and that I’d be safer here. I can’t believe I actually have a brother… I mean, I’ve always known but…” “Seeing it is just different, isn’t it?” The boy smiled and his sister nodded. “Hey, how did you find the Island?” “I had no trouble getting here. I’m… good at spotting things I suppose! So… are you going to invite me in?” She grinned, obviously anxious to see the Castle. “Um… sure…” Said Nathaniel with uncertainty. How would Choethel react when he saw her? She looked just like her mother…

Choethel left the council chambers as soon as the Dark SiDe meeting was over, he didn’t even say a word to Queen SD as he hurried off, which was unusual. Something was different, but he just couldn’t get his fingers on it. He tried scanning the Castle’s aura, to check if anything had changed but he found nothing out of the ordinary. You look troubled. Why did you hurry off like that? Samantha’s voice echoed in his mind. I don’t know, he mumbled back. I can’t define it. I’ll leave you to it then, SD replied and Cho could almost see her smiling at him in a comforting way.
Still troubled though slightly more relaxed, the Sprit walked aimlessly through the multiple corridors of the Castle – he seemed to be doing that a lot lately. Eventually he reached the main hall and, sensing Nathaniel’s presence, he called out his name, before even turning around the corner. As soon as he did so, he came face to face with a girl, looking no older than his son, and nearly jumped out of his skin. How had she sneaked up on him? He should have sensed her! More carefully this time, he reached for the girl’s presence, but it wasn’t there – not matter how hard he tried; it was as if she didn’t exit. Realising that he was in fact simply standing there, seemingly doing nothing, he took a break from his world of thoughts and looked the girl in the eyes. Then he flinched.
When Tundra had left, an undefined feeling of emptiness had overtaken him. Over the years he had managed to detach himself from that feeling, as much as he could, but it was never easy. That was why he tried not to bring her picture in his mind, as hard as it was to do so. And now he was staring straight at her. Because who could that person be but Tundra? She had the same intense chocolate-gray eyes, and that all-too-familiar mesmerizing smile. “T…Tundra…?” He managed to mutter, feeling strangely light-headed. “Oh no, of course not!” The girl giggled – she found it amusing that so many people confused her with her mother. “I’m Marianne, her daughter!” That was when Nathaniel decided to step in. “Err… Marianne… I don’t think this is the best time…” He whispered to her through his teeth, and then turned to his father, who was staring at the girl speechless. “Cho, I had no idea… I mean, I thought Tundra would have kept her…” “Wait… Cho?” Marianne’s eyes widened. “You’re… you’re my father?!” The Sprit simply nodded. “But that’s impossible! When did you have me, when you were eight years old or something?!” Nathaniel couldn’t help but let out a small laugh. “Why, does mother seem any older?” “Well no, but I always thought it was because of the elven blood… Dad on the other hand doesn’t seem like an elf at all. More like a vampire, with that pale skin, now that I think about it... You’re not, are you?!” “I am most definitely not a vampire!” Cho finally found his voice. “Didn’t she ever tell you about me?” Marianne shook her head. “She rarely mentioned your name… I think it pained her too much to do so, though she wouldn’t admit it…” A long silence followed that no one dared break.
__________
“I don’t care how well concealed they are, you must find them! It’s been almost two decades, and still no sign of them?” The voices of thousands spoke as one, all with the same tone of urgency. “Especially the boy. He doesn’t belong there, it’s against nature. The power he holds is too great – a Pure Immortal should never be allowed to walk the planet.” “You sound as if you’re losing your temper,” a shadowy figure observed with her lips curved into a sly smile. “Mark our words Deva, you don’t want us to lose our temper,” threatened the voices. “No, indeed I do not…” she turned her head to the sky, where the voices were coming from. “I thought Sprits never interfered with the affairs of the mortals, not this way anyway.” “Things have changed. That boy is walking the earth because one of us bred with a mortal! And they have a Deva protecting them as well, who now goes by the name of Grey.” “Two Sprits and a Pure Immortal, tell me how do you expect me to face them?” The female Deva raised her voice. “There is no need for a battle, you know that we do not support violence sister. Just in case, however, and for your own protection, we will give you our energy, share our power with you until your task is complete.” There was a glint in her eyes. “The Sprits’ energy? It is massive… I’ll be as powerful as that boy, Nathaniel, perhaps even more powerful!” She grinned. “I will carry out your task alright…” “Don’t let power cloud your mind…” the mass of the Sprits warned, before the Deva dashed off.
